calif. map This page will feature a new state each month. Since I have lived most of my life in California, I thought I would start with it. This month I am only able to show the central part of California. Then next month will be Northern California and the month after that will be Southern California.

Central California has some spectacular scenery. Starting with one of the most famous of National Parks, Yosesemite National Park. Majestic cliffs, beautiful waterfalls, wildlife, and gorgeous scenery. Yosemite National Park embraces a vast tract of scenic wildlands set aside in 1890 to preserve a portion of the Sierra Nevada that stretches along California's eastern flank. The park ranges from 2,000 feet above sea level to more than 13,000 feet and offers 3 major features; alpine wilderness, groves of Giant Sequoias, and Yosemite Valley.

Kings and Sequoia National Parksare two other National Parks. Sequoia is the second-oldest national park in the United States. It was established in 1890 to protect the Big Trees in Giant Forest, including the General Sherman Tree, the world's largest living thing. Sequoia also contains the Mineral King Valley and Mt. Whitney, the highest mountain in the U.S. outside of Alaska.

A small portion of what is now Kings Canyon was originally set aside in 1890 as General Grant National Park. In 1940, General Grant was absorbed into the new and larger Kings Canyon National Park which eventually grew to include the South Fork of the Kings River and 456,552 acres of backcountry wilderness. Managed as one park, together Sequoia and Kings Canyon total over 863,700 acres.

I have traveled extensively throughout these parks. I only live an hour away. The Giant Sequoias are a must see. They are the tallest and oldest trees in the world. They are nicknamed the United States Christmas Tree.

If you take a drive down the Central Coast Highway you will see some fantastic views of the Pacific Ocean. You can see seals playing on the rocks in ocean. The California Coast is where they make their winter home. You can also see lots of beaches, resorts, and there is always the Santa Cruz Boardwalk.

Then if you travel through the Central Valley, you will see the agricultural area of California. California grows 98% of the world's food. Some of the agricultural items grown in the Central Valley includes, Pistachios, cotton, grapes, cantaloupe, fruit (all kinds), vegetables (all kinds), oranges, and kiwis. The weather in the Central Valley can get very hot in the summer with temperatures reaching the 110's. In the winter the weather is cool, mild, and foggy.
